INFERTILITY WORK-UP
1) Ovulation needs to be confirmed with a basal body temperature chart or by an ovulation predicting kit.
2) A semen analysis from the husband is a simple and fairly inexpensive evaluation of a male factor problem (an information sheet is available upon request on just how to schedule this).
3) Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an x-ray dye test
that is done to see if the tubes are open. It is done at the hospital and should be done within the 10 days following the start of a normal period (call 394-2497 to schedule this once your period starts).
4) The post-coital test examines the cervical mucus for healthy sperm 2 hours after sexual activity. This is done in my office on day 12-14 of 28 day cycle. The test is preformed during the mid-cycle when the cervical mucus is watery.
5) Prolactin, serum progesterone and thyroid stimulating hormone blood tests are drawn on the tenth day after ovulation to look for some of the more common hormonal problems that cause infertility.
6) Laparoscopy is then done, if all above is normal. With this belly button day surgery, I look directly at the pelvic organs and see if any anatomical problems exist.
