MEDICAL REASONS FOR ULTRASOUND STUDIES
Ultrasound scans, also known as sonograms, have without a doubt been a major part of the improved outcomes that we see in modern obstetrics and most of my patients do get at least one sonogram during their pregnancies. Sonograms appear to be safe and can offer much useful information. They can also determine the baby's sex with fair reliability once the baby is in the second trimester.
Unfortunately, sex determination or getting a video of the baby are not considered appropriate medical indications for a sonogram and are not usually covered by insurance. At this point, some insurance companies do pay for one "routine" sonogram in pregnancy. Your benefits coordinator should be able to find out if this is the case, if not I will need a medical reason to do a sonogram and bill it to your insurance. Indications to do a sonogram currently include:
vaginal bleeding
suspected breech
previous cesarean
size less than dates
high blood pressure
size greater than dates
persistent abdominal pain
I will be truthful with you, but I must also be truthful with the insurance company that covers your health care. If you just want a sonogram for the sex or to have a video of the pregnancy, I can bill it to your insurance under the diagnosis of pregnancy, they may not cover it and then you would be responsible for the cost. A sonogram is $230.00 and it comes with no absolute guarantee of the correct sex. We also charge $175.00 for 3D sonos and they are also out of pocket for the patient. In other words, don't paint the room pink until the baby is born!
